Noted Hindi writer Krishna Sobti’s Hindi story मेरी माँ कहाँ [Translated as “Where is My Mother?”] is a powerful story set against the violence of Partition. First published in 1949, the story effectively presents the conflict between hatred and humanity. Through Yunus Khan’s transformation from a ruthless soldier to a compassionate protector of an injured Hindu girl, Sobti shows how humanity can survive even in the midst of hatred and communal violence. The girl’s repeated cry, “Where are my brothers? Where is my sister? Where is my mother?”, makes the tragedy of innocent victims especially poignant.
