इक कुड़ी जिदा नाम मोहब्बत, गुम है, गुम है, गुम है।
“A girl whose name is love, is missing, is missing, is missing”
Shiv Kumar Batalvi ((23 July 1936 – 7 May 1973)
A famous Punjabi language poet with a folk consciousness and modern sensibility, Shiv Kumar excelled with a freshness of vocabulary, diction, imagery and rhythmic flow of words which remain unparalleled in Punjabi poetry. Shiv was born in a village near Sialkot (Pakistan). His family moved to Batala, Gurdaspur (India) after Indian partition in 1947. The pangs of this separation are recurrent themes of this great poet of the land. One of my current favorites composed by Shiv Kumar Batalvi is ”ik kudi jida naam mohabbat, gum hai gum hai” sung by Shahid Mallya in his beautiful voice. From the soundtrack of Udta Punjab (2016)
