At one of our Hindi dinners at Leiden, one of my students informed me that there is a Russian supermarket in Leiden. It was kind of nice surprise. So on a fine Saturday morning we decided to visit this place for a quick survey. It is located on a quite well-known road named ‘Breestraat’ (which is in existence in Leiden since middle ages, whoa ! the feeling of walking on a medieval road.). After a bit of walking we could easily spot the cute Matryoshka dolls looking at us from the shopping windows.
We finally reached the small Russian supermarket named Sarafan Russische en Oost-Europese Specialiteiten Winkel. Unfortunately it was closed that morning. But of course we managed to do some window shopping and took some pictures.
There were many interesting items on display. Though I was equally amused to find a Matryoshka doll with an image of Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev with lots of Russian flags (including Soviet Union flags).
Trivia – СССР (Союз Советских Социалистических Республик) is a Russian (Cyrillic) abbreviation for the Soviet Union.
We later came to know that there is a website too of this amazing Russian supermarket, where you can order stuff online. Here is the link –
We plan to visit again soon.
