If Moksha is the goal of life for Indians, then dharma is the means through which man approaches the desired goals. Dharma can be loosely translated as moral duty, right action, conformity with the truth of things etc. To take makes things clearer traditional Indians always  take the help of short narratives or stories. This is one of those short stories about dharma:

In one of Indian kingdoms there was once a king who was strolling along the banks of the river Ganges one early mornings with an entourage of his ministers. It was the monsoon season and the river was in spate, its swirling water rushing towards the sea. The broad sweep of the swollen river and its strong current filled the king with awe. Suddenly mindful of his own insignificance, he addressed his ministers : “is there no one on this earth who can reverse the flow of this river so that it flows from the sea to the Himalaya mountains?”

The ministers, shaking their heads, smiled at the king’s naivete but an old prostitute that overheard his question stepped forward and addressed the river thus:

“O mother Ganges, if I have striven to fulfill my dharma as a whore by giving body to all comers, without distinguishing rich from poor, old from young, good from bad, then reverse your flow!”
The waters stood still for a moment, as if in deliberation, and then the river started flowing backwards.

भारतीय मानस में धर्म क्या है?
भारतवर्ष के एक देश में एक राजा राज करता था। एक दिन सुबह-सुबह राजा मंत्रियों के साथ गंगा नदी के किनारे टहल रहा था। बारिश का मौसम था, गंगा नदी में पानी उफान पर था। नदी का जल तेज़ी से सागर की ओर बह रहा था। नदी के तेज़ बहाव और विशाल रूप को देख राजा चकित था। राजा सोच रहा था कि वह इस नदी के सामने कितना छोटा और लाचार है। तभी उसने अपने मंत्रियों को कहा – क्या समूची दुनिया में ऐसा कोई है जो इस नदी की धारा को उलट दे, और नदी सागर से हिमालय पर्वत की ओर बहने लगे? मंत्रियों ने सर हिलाते हुए राजा के बचकाने सवाल पर मुस्कुराते हुए कहा कि दुनिया में शायद ऐसा कोई नहीं है। एक बूढ़ी वेश्या जो पास से गुजर रही थी। उसने राजा और मंत्रियों के बीच की बातचीत सुनी। वह राजा के सामने ही नदी की ओर बढ़ी और कहा – “हे गंगा माता अगर मैंने अपना धर्म मेरे पास आने वाले लोगों चाहे वे अमीर हो या गरीब, जवान हो या बूढ़े, अच्छे हो या बुरे सभी को अपना शरीर देकर निभाया है, तो तुम उलटकर बहना शुरू कर दो।”
नदी का जल कुछ देर के लिए ठहर गया जैसे कुछ देर विचार कर रहा हो, और फिर कुछ देर बाद नदी सागर से हिमालय की ओर उलटी दिशा में बहने लगी।
